HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE
Curriculum Connections

This resource was created to align with the following Design and Technology content descriptors for year 5/6

Design and Technologies Knowledge and Understanding

Investigate how and why food and fibre are produced in managed environments and prepared to enable people to grow and be healthy (ACTDEK021).

Elaboration

Describing the relationship between plant types and animal breeds and their environmental suitability when selecting suitable plants or animals for an environment.

Design and Technologies Processes and Production Skills

Generate, develop and communicate design ideas and processes for audiences using appropriate technical terms and graphical representation techniques (ACTDEP025)

Elaboration

Generating a range of design ideas for products, services or environments using prior knowledge, skills and research.

This resource is designed to be used as an activity to span two or more lessons. Students can work individually, in pairs or in small groups. Prior knowledge required for this activity is mainly the use of a computer or tablet in order to view the web page and the associated links as well as being able to conduct individual research.

Students will use critical and creative thinking in order to make choices, as well as literacy, ICT and ethical understanding while, researching, designing and drawing their egg farm.

Extension students may undertake further research into a particular area of interest such as the campaign against battery hens and students who require additional support can be grouped in order to divide roles and design a farm together. These students may also require more guided instruction such as designing a pre-determined type of farm such as a free-range egg farm using a mobile chicken shed.

Once the activity is completed students can be given the task to design an advertisement to promote their eggs using their research to determine the type of consumer they are targeting and the best selling points of their product as part of a literacy task. This can be linked to persuasive text, text elements, grammar and art.
